Na konci 70. a začátku 80. let minulého století, tedy v počátcích herního průmyslu, se tvůrci her museli někde inspirovat, pakliže chyběl vlastní nápad. Film jim byl pro příběh hry ideální inspirací. K tvorbě hry podle filmu rovněž přispíval i fakt, že téma bylo známé (např. Zorro nebo osobnost Bruce Lee), takže hra měla větší šanci na úspěch. Asi to nebude žádná marketingová novinka, že filmová studia přišla záhy na to, že k podpoře sledovanosti jejich filmů nechají vytvořit počítačovou hru nebo alespoň prodají práva na její vytvoření. Jsou např. hry Predator, Batman, Gremlins a mnoho a mnoho dalších.
Později, kdy se v 90. letech herní průmysl více rozvinul, se pozornost při tvorbě filmových scénářů obrátila k úspěšným hrám. Známé jsou filmy Lara Croft – Tomb Raider (2001), Tetris (2023), Super Mario Bros. (1993), Doom (2005), Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (2010) nebo Minecraft film (2025). Z herního světa také čerpají Pixely (2015) nebo Ready Player One: Hra začíná (2018).
Rozsáhlá tabulka (seřazená abecedně podle názvu filmu) obsahuje seznam her inspirovaných filmy a obráceně. Jedná se o platformy ATARI XL/XE a ST (v několika případech i Falcon a Jaguar), Commodore 64 a Amiga a Sinclair ZX Spectrum, tedy platformy stojící na konci 70., pak hlavně v 80. a na začátku 90. let u zrodu herního průmyslu. Samozřejmě, že by si i další platformy jako jsou Nintendo, ale i PC, PlayStation a XBox zasluhovaly být uvedeny, ale už teď je tabulka velmi obsáhlá.
Samostatný seznam by mohl vzniknout i pro československé počítače Ondra, PMD a IQ. Her asi nebude takové množství, ale určitě se najdou pěkné a raritní, i když třeba „jen“ textové hry.
Též by bylo zajímavé samostatně prozkoumat další platformy ATARI, tedy herní konzole 2600, 5200 a 7800, Lynx a Jaguar a to celé doplnit o hry na pro počítač Falcon a snad i na Portfolio by se něco našlo.
Jak vidno, téma je velmi obsáhlé.
